Best Taco Shells

The Best Taco Shells are hard to find, but let me tell you, I have found them. You may think finding a good taco shell is about the brand, or even corn vs. flour tortillas. But I think it is all about how they are cooked. Keep reading below to find out how to prepare the Best Taco Shells.

Corn vs. Flour Tortillas

Personally, I have never cared for corn tortillas. I have always picked flour, but there is something about the way these taco shells are prepared that has changed my mind. My sister-in-law actually got me on these, and I am a changed woman.

But like I said, it’s all in the way they are cooked. So, first of all, you got to start with corn tortillas. I prefer the white corn, but you can use yellow corn tortillas as well. Now the key is you got to fry them. I know…not the healthiest, but they are so good!

Drop it Like it’s Hot

You have your corn tortillas, now what. Well, the next step is to make sure your oil is good and hot, but not too hot. You don’t want them to get too brown. I just put 3 inches or so of my favorite cooking oil into a saucepan and turn the heat up to medium high to get it hot. Then drop the heat to medium when it is time to fry up the shells.

First, lay your tortilla in the pan flat, and let it cook for just a few seconds to get it softened up. Then, using tongs, flip the tortilla over, and fold it in half. Let it cook on both sides until it is nice and golden brown.

This is the Best Part

The last steps are the most important. You want to make sure to let all the grease drain off, so your shells stay good and crunchy. So lay out paper towels and stand them up so all of the oil drains off. Then comes the last and most important step. Salt. You want to make sure while the shells are still hot to sprinkle them with salt. This makes them have so much more flavor.

Now all that is left to do it to stuff them with your favorite taco ingredients. Yum. Stay tuned next week for my favorite taco meat to put in my favorite taco shells.
