You can make your potato soup completely from scratch, but if love a good easy semi-homemade hack on a classic recipe you can use diced frozen potatoes to save some time.

The best ingredients to add to potato soup really depends on your preference.  The best part of soup is you can add any flavors and seasoning you like. 

How do you make Potato Soup?

To make this easy soup you just peel your potatoes, dice them into uniform pieces, and add them into a pot of boiling chicken broth. You can boil your potatoes in water, but switching out boiling them in water for broth adds so much flavor.

What makes Potato Soup Recipes thick?

Potato soup will naturally thicken from the potatoes, but no one wants a thin potato soup. If you are finding that your potato soup is not quite thick enough. Try adding corn starch or flour to a little water, to create a slurry, and add this to your soup while it is still simmering.

Is Potato Soup good for you?

Potato Soup is the ultimate comfort food. When you find yourself craving something warm and delicious it is the perfect option, especially if you are not feeling well. 

While potatoes are not the most healthy food for you, a warm soup can be good to open up your sinuses. Potato soup can also be a great option for an uneasy stomach. And this soup was one of my favorites when I was not feeling well as a child.

Classic Potato Soup Recipe

Easy Classic Potato Soup Recipe

  • 4 large Potatoes
  • 3-4 cups Chicken Broth
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 large Onion (Optional)
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheese
  1. In a large pot, bring broth to a boil.

  2. Wash, peel, and dice potatoes and onion (optional) then add to boiling broth. Cook until potatoes are fork tender and onions are soft. Drain broth and reserve for later.

  3. Add butter, milk, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste to pot then continuing to boil on medium heat.

  4. Cook until soup reduces and potatoes are your desired softness. If you like a thicker soup, use a fork to slightly mash some of the potatoes. For a thinner soup add some of your reserved broth.

  5. Serve hot topped with shredded cheese, and any of your favorite toppings.
