3 Garden Layout Mistakes to Avoid
I have put together 3 Garden Layout Mistakes to Avoid when planting your garden. Whether you are a seasoned gardener, or a newbie, we have all made our gardening mistakes. I am sharing a few mistakes we made when planting that I hope can save you some time, and money.
1. Planting Too Close Together
Make sure you are leaving plenty of space between each plant. My husband and I tried to squeeze extra tomato plants into a smaller space, to keep from having to till more land. In the end, this caused us more of a headache. The tomato plants all turned into one big tomato bush, and ran out of room to grow. This also made harvesting the plants difficult. They were so tightly packed, it caused us to miss a lot of good fruit because we couldn’t see it. Leave your plants room to grow, and room for yourself to harvest.
2. Keep Vining Plants Contained
When growing vining plants, like cucumbers and watermelons, keep in mind they like to expand, a lot. Make sure you are training them where you want them to grow. Plant them away from other plants they could easily get lost in. Use a trellis to give them vertical space to expand, or give them plenty of space to crawl. Keep vining plants contained, if not, they can easily take over other plants.
3. Grow Fragile Plants in Safe Spaces
Grow fragile plants in an area that is safe for them. Smaller plants, like onions, that are less noticeable, or not as sturdy, should be planted in a protected place, out of the way of garden hoses and foot traffic. We lost all of our onions one year because they were planted on the busiest perimeter of the garden. So keep your fragile plants safe, in the middle of the garden, or in a raised bed.
I hope by sharing my garden layout mistakes, I can save you a few headaches, or dollars. But remember, everyone makes mistakes! That is how you learn. Some of the best things in life come from happy mistakes.
