Harvesting Blueberries
Harvesting Blueberries is one of my favorite farm chores. I honestly don’t even like blueberries, but there is something about picking fresh blueberries from your garden and popping them directly in your mouth. I mean I try to give them a little wipe off on my shirt, but dirt is good for the immune system, right?
Out of all the “stolen” garden blueberries I have eaten, some just taste better than others. You got to pick your blueberries at just the right time for prime sweetness. Keep reading below to find out my tips for Harvesting Blueberries.
What Color are Your Blueberries?
This may sound stupid, but stick with me… My first tip for harvesting blueberries is to wait until they turn blue. I know what you are thinking. “Duh.” But I mean you really want to wait until they are BLUE, with no purple or red tint. If you have ever had a really tart blueberry, it was likely not all the way blue.
Be Gentle with Blueberries
You have to be gentle when it comes to harvesting blueberries. Well, you don’t have to, but it helps. When harvesting ripe blueberries, you should be able to gently pull them off the bush, no tugging required. If you feel like you are having to tug the berries to get them off the bush, they likely are not quite ripe.
The fine line between Blueberries and Ground Berries
There is always a fine line when it comes to blueberries. Wait too long to harvest and you may wake up to find all of your berries on the ground all shriveled up. My solution for this is, if you must pick your berries before they are ripe, wait until the turn red or purple. Then leave them on your counter at room temperature. Blueberries will usually ripen off the bush.
