Repotting Indoor Plants

Repotting Indoor Plants to get your cute plants out of those ugly plastic containers. Plants hold a lot more water when they are in the plastic containers they come in from the store. You may think extra water would be a good thing, but most plants can handle a lot less water than expected.

I like to get my plants repotted within a couple of weeks of buying them. I prefer to keep my house plants in heavier glass vases, and pots. Heavier pots are less likely to topple over, and this is very important, especially if you have young children or pets.

Where to Get Cheap Pots?

I get most of my plant pots at the Goodwill, and I always keep an eye out for pots on sale. I keep a few pots put back at all times so I am always ready for my next plant baby. A good tip for finding pots on sale is waiting ’til the end of gardening season. I always score a few pots half off, or more, if I wait. And you know what they say.. good things come to those who wait. : )

1. Preparing Your Plant Pot

After you find the perfect plant pot, it’s time to get started planting. You always want to make sure you have sufficient water drainage. By adding several rocks to the bottom of your pot you will assure your plant stays healthy, as this will help keep fungus and bacteria away from the roots.

Next, start adding your soil. I mix equal parts potting soil with dirt from our farm. We have sandy soil at the farm, and it is perfect for water drainage. Add a little soil over your rocks to create a bed for your plant to sit stable in its new pot.

2. Repotting Your Plant

Now it is time to move your plant to its new home. Make sure you are gentle, and slowly ease your plant from its original pot, being extra careful with the roots. Sit your plant stable on top of the bed of rock and dirt, and start adding soil around the plant until your plant is secure. Fill your soil to the top of the pot and pat down any loose soil lightly.

3. Finishing Touches

My favorite thing to add to my indoor plants to make them look even more put together is a layer of white rock at the top of the pot. This is such a good tip for cat owners to keep your fur babies from scratching in your plant. Trust me, I have learned this the hard way. I find these little bags of rock at the Dollar Tree, and they make your indoor plants look so much more expensive.

I hope these tips for Repotting Indoor Plants helps you to give your plant babies a fresh new home. P.S. Don’t forget to add some water, but not too much! ; )
