What are Beef Dumplings?
Dumplings or “dumplins” are the ultimate comfort food. When most people think of dumplins they think chicken, but this beef recipe is a wonderful twist.
Made with all the same ingredients as classic chicken and dumplins, but substitute the chicken broth and meat for beef broth and roast.
What are Southern Dumplins made of?
You can make your dumplings completely from scratch, but I also love a good easy semi-homemade hack for a classic recipe. You can use store-bought, if you don’t have time to make the homemade ones. But nothing beats the real deal.
To made dumplins from scratch all you need is broth, flour, eggs, and some salt and pepper. It is really so easy. I have also heard of people using biscuits and even tortillas as a quick replacement for homemade dumplins.
What type of flour is best for Dumplings?
The best flour to use is all purpose. The most important part of homemade dumplings is making sure to season your flour. This is what takes the flavor to the next level.
I make sure to add plenty of salt and pepper to my flour to make sure I have layered in the most flavor.
How do you thicken Dumplins?
The thickness of your dumpling gravy comes from the flour. Be sure to use plenty of flour when rolling out your dumplins. All that messy flour makes a difference, especially if you want a thick dumpling gravy, which is my personal favorite.
If you are finding that your gravy is too thin, you can make a slurry using flour and water to help thicken them.

Homemade Beef & Dumplings
Homemade Southern Beef and Dumplings
- 2 – 48 oz Beef Broth
- 4 cubes Beef Bullion
- 4-5 cups flour
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded Roast Beef or Canned Beef
- 2 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1 tbsp Butter (optional)
Add broth to large pot, and add bullion until you have a flavorful beef broth, turn pot on high, and bring to a boil.
To make Homemade Dumplings, take a cup of broth from the large pot. Make sure it is not too hot, add a splash of milk to cool if needed. In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup all purpose flour and one egg, and 1/4 tsp salt. Use a fork to mix until egg and flour form crumbles, don't over mix. Slowly pour in 1/3 cup of your reserved broth, using a fork to mix in between pours until a dough ball forms. Repeat this step twice until you have 3 balls of dough. Add flour to the outside of each ball if sticky.
Generously flour your counter and knead dough ball several times. Roll out each ball until 1/6 inch thick, adding flour to keep dough from sticking. And cut into 2 in wide dumplings. You can made them as long or short as you want. Stack dumplings onto a plate and take to your pot of boiling water.
Drop (homemade or store-bought) dumplings into boiling broth in one at a time stirring occasionally to keep them from sticking. Turn heat to low, and let cook for an hour, or until dumplings are tender, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye one your pot as it tends to want to bubble over.
Before serving add 2 cups of shredded roast beef, or a large can of canned beef. If using canned beef, be sure to remove any fat on top.
Top with 1/4 -1/3 cup milk, 1 tbsp butter, and salt and pepper to taste, and mix well.
Serve hot and enjoy.
