Southern Ham and Beans
Southern Ham and Beans are a flavorful dish that goes so well with any meal, and hearty enough to be the main course.
Your family will love these beans full of flavor, and you guessed it…ham. Keep reading below to find out how I make my Southern Ham and Beans Recipe.
What can I add to Ham & Beans for flavor?
Beans really pair so well with so many different types of flavors. But for my Southern Beans the easiest way to add flavor is ham.
The saltiness from the ham really soaks into the beans but I also love to add some seasonings for extra flavor.
What spices go well with Ham and Beans?
Some of my favorite seasonings to add to beans are garlic and onion powder. Also, don’t forget the salt and pepper.
- Onion
- Garlic
- Black Pepper
What kind of beans should you use?
In my family we use dried Great Northern Beans, but pinto beans are also a great option. No matter what kind of dried beans you use there is also one thing that is up for debate…
Your Beans…to Soak or Not Soak. That is the Question.
One great debate is whether you should soak your beans. I am guilty of forgetting to soak my beans, and they come out fine every time. They just take a little longer to cook.
If you have the time to soak your beans overnight this will save you cooking time, but it is not a necessity.
What is the key to making the best Ham and Beans?
The key to making the best beans is all about cooking them low and slow, and not adding too much liquid. I love a good thick bowl of beans. The thicker they are the more flavor they will have.
