Tips for Planting Pumpkins
Planting my own Pumpkins is one of my favorite parts of having a garden. It not only saves me money on my fall decor, but you can also eat them, so they are cute and functional. Pumpkins are not only super cute, they are pretty easy and low maintenance to grow. As easy as they may be, I have a few tips that will make your life so much easier. Keep reading below to find out my Tips for Planting Pumpkins.
Room to Grow
First of all, Pumpkins need room. Believe me when I tell you they like to take off and run. We usually plant ours in their own big section of garden, away from things they could grow into and get tangled up. So make sure to plant them with plenty of room to grow.
Train your Pumpkins
You can train and encourage your pumpkins to grow in your preferred direction. I like to give my pumpkins plenty of horizontal space and try to keep them contained to their area of the garden, moving their vines in the direction I want them to grow. You can also train them to grow vertically or up a trellis.
Staggered Pumpkin Planting
I like to stagger when I plant my pumpkins so I have some ready early for fall decorations, some for Halloween, and some for Thanksgiving. By staggering my planting I can enjoy my pumpkins all fall season long.
Plant your Pumpkins on Time
In my opinion, the number one mistake you can make when planting pumpkins is waiting too long. Believe me I have made this mistake, and my jack-o-lantern pumpkins did not turn orange until Thanksgiving. Be sure to look into how long it will take your pumpkins to be ready to harvest and plant accordingly. And once you have harvested your pumpkins you can find out how I preserve my pumpkins to make them last all season long.
